Community Tours

Wednesday, March 5 from 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

These community tours are an opportunity to have a first-hand look at some innovative approaches to housing development and organizing in the Sacramento Region area. This is a great way to kick off your conference experience by immersing yourself in the affordable housing work that is taking place in our host city.
NOTE: Each tour will require 30-60 minutes of walking and standing, even the bus tours. We recommend comfortable walking shoes and attire. If you have mobility concerns, please contact conference@housingca.org to discuss accommodations.
Tours are an optional add-on to the conference with a separate ticket.

Tour 1: Farmworker, Rural, and Manufactured Housing — Oh My!

Bus Tour- Capacity is 45 people

Just outside of Sacramento brings us into the rich agricultural landscapes that define the Sacramento Valley. Here we will tour a farmworker housing community by Mutual Housing California, Springlake, which was the first of its kind to reach Net Zero Energy. This tour will also join with our partners at the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Office of Migrant Centers to visit one of the State’s housing options for farmworkers who do not stay permanently in one community. Additionally, the tour will stop to explore a manufactured housing community that was acquired and lifted up by CHOC and Rural Community Assistance Corporation. If you’ve ever wanted to explore farmworker, rural, or manufactured housing — this is it! Purchase your tickets for Tour 1 here.

Tour 2: Creative Placemaking and Infill Housing: Planning for the Long Haul

Bus and Walking Tour-Capacity is 30 people

How has Sacramento learned from its past urban development efforts? With a history littered with examples of disenfranchising communities in the name of urban renewal, Sacramento citizens sought to unite rather than divide neighborhoods when planning to transform a historic industrial corridor in the core of its downtown. Join us for an enlightening tour through Sacramento’s R Street Corridor, where you will learn how visionary community members, urban planners and developers are shaping a creative and inclusive neighborhood. Purchase your tickets for Tour 2 here.

Tour 3: Transit Oriented Development: Exploring Multi-Benefit Housing in Sacramento

Transit Tour- Capacity is 30 people

Tour 4: Supporting & Empowering Our Unhomed Neighbors

Bus Tour- Capacity is 30-45 people

The tour will feature local organizations that serve and empower people experiencing homelessness and a self-governing group, the Sacramento Homeless Union. We will visit the campuses of Loaves and Fishes and Women’s Empowerment to hear about their programs, successes and challenges and from some of the participants and guests. We will also visit with the Sacramento Homeless Union to talk about their work in establishing a self-governing encampment community (which unfortunately has been closed but the story is not yet over) and their other efforts to support their members.
